Childhood obesity is now such an epidemic that the International Journal of Pediatric Obesity is a brand new journal launched this month just to disseminate research specific to obesity and children.
Is there a light at the end of the tunnel to bring this epidemic to a reasonable solution? Probably not – at least not in the short term. As Dr. Phillip Thomas pointed out that childhood obesity is like the plaque in town and no one is interested. He further stated, “This is going to be the first generation that’s going to have a lower life expectancy than their parents.”
The long-term implications for the epidemic are frightening. The probability of an obese child become an obese adult is very high. This means obese children will have a lifetime of diseases, disorders, illnesses and injuries commonly linked with obesity such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, certain cancers, back problems and the list goes on. Joint replacements will occur at a young age and sicknesses will be routine. The physical pain obese children will suffer as they become adults will be severe and long-term.
No parent would want that for their children. So what can parents do so that their children won’t become an obesity statistic? Remember the probability of your children becoming obese by the year 2010 (less than 5 years from now) is 50% - one out of every two children is not very good odds. So the first thing is to be honest about your children’s current height and weight. Discuss this with your pediatrician to get a fair assessment of your children’s chances of becoming obese.
Now for the hard part. Although our eating habits have contributed to this epidemic, lack of physical activity has contributed even more.
So first severely limit TV, computer games and computer use (unless needed for school work) and introduce more physical activity. The weather is improving so introduce family walks after dinner. Or put on some music and just begin to move around the house in beat with the music. It could be fun with laughter and that is good for everyone. A word of caution – don’t confuse organized sports with play. Play is much better for your children. What they need is time to play and explore. Introduce healthy snacks such as raw veggies and fruit instead cookies and other sweets.
Further the younger children need to be educated on the Why’s of physical activity and nutrition. We recommend the Heart “E” Heart storybook series that can be purchased in the Shop section of this web site. Heart “E” Heart is the gold standard when it comes to physical activity and healthy nutrition. Children love to emulate Heart “E” Heart and so will you.
